I. Mediation Overview
What is Mediation?
Mediation is a voluntary and confidential process in which a third-party (the mediator) helps disputing parties (people) to reach their own mutually acceptable settlement.
How is Mediation different from the court process and arbitration?
The mediator doesn't tell the parties what to do, or make a judgment about who's right and who's wrong. Instead, the mediator manages the communication process and moves the discussion toward an agreement.
Who is Mediation for?
Mediation is for people involved in:
* neighborhood disputes,
* family disputes, including divorce, custody and parent-child,
* landlord-tenant disputes,
* employment disputes, and
* commercial disputes
What does Mediation Cost?
Free and low-cost mediation services are available from mediation centers operated by state, local and/or non-profit organizations. Mediators in private practice can be located through your local or state bar association.
